“Ema”: In the trailer for Pablo Larraín’s visually stunning drama, dance meets flamethrower
“Ema”, the new film by Pablo Larraín (“Jackie”), was shown in the competition at the Venice Film Festival and delighted audiences and critics. How visually stunning the extraordinary drama is is already revealed in the trailer:
Gastón (Gael García Bernal) and Ema (Mariana Di Girolamo) are members of a dance company and a couple. They adopted the boy Polo (Cristián Suárez), but separated from him after a year after he seriously injured and disfigured Ema’s sister. The decision to return Polo to the children’s home fundamentally changes the couple’s life.
Ema and Gastón are criticized and condemned for their decision. But instead of mourning because of it, Ema opts for rebellion. Together with her dancing friends and a flamethrower, she faces criticism …
“Relentless drama”, “exaggerated farce” or “absurd grotesque”? chief critic Christoph Petersen, who saw the film at the Venice Festival in 2019, is not sure what Pablo Larraín’s latest work is supposed to be. In any case, he was enthusiastic, as you can read here:
