Will the classic become a masterpiece? Completely new version of “The Godfather 3” is coming
What Zack Snyder can do with his “Snyder Cut” from “Justice League”, Francis Ford Coppola has been able to do for a long time. Curtain up for the “Coppola Cut” of “The Godfather III” aka “Mario Puzo’s The Godfather Coda: The Death Of Michael Corleone”. Soon in the cinema …
As Paramount announced, a new cut of “The Godfather 3” will be released in the US in December 2020. It is more or less a new film and therefore there is also a new title: “Mario Puzo’s The Godfather Coda: The Death Of Michael Corleone” should finally show us the version that director Francis Ford Coppola and author Mario Puzo always had in mind .
A new version of “The Godfather 3” will be released in the US in December 2020.
After the theatrical release, a digital release and of course the mandatory release on Blu-ray and DVD will follow xmovies8.
What the plans for Germany look like is not yet known. We have already asked Paramount whether a cinema release is planned in this country as well.
This is new in “Mario Puzo’s The Godfather Coda: The Death Of Michael Corleone”
In a statement, Francis Ford Coppola already provides some background information for the new version, the creation of which he completely supervises: “For this version of the finale, I made a new beginning and a new ending, and also rearranged some scenes, takes and musical interventions . “
“For this version of the finale, I made a new beginning and a new ending, and also rearranged some scenes, takes and musical elements.”
It is interesting in this context that Coppola explicitly speaks of having made a new beginning and a new end, while in contrast to other scenes he talks about having rearranged them. So we can assume that he didn’t just change the beginning and the end a bit, but that he may have used alternative material available to him, so these scenes could be completely different. As is well known, there have been versions with alternative opening scenes in the past (for example on DVD and on TV), which only brought about slight changes.
The new film title is also important to him. This is the recognition of Mario Puzo’s preferred title, as well as the author and “The Godfather” inventor, and their original intentions for what then became “The Godfather 3”. As is well known, Coppola, who for a long time did not want to make the film at all and refused to do a third part, and Puzo pressed for the film to be called “The Death Of Michael Corleone” even before it was released in 1990, but could not assert themselves. Coppola always refused to use the third part because the film is an epilogue for him.
Now at the level of the predecessor?
With the changes and the completely restored picture and sound, it is now a much more appropriate conclusion for “The Godfather” and “The Godfather 2”. The two predecessors are known to be two of the greatest masterpieces in film history. The reception of the third part was much more controversial.
be it a much more appropriate ending for “The Godfather” and “The Godfather 2”
While “The Godfather 3” was nominated for seven Oscars, including best film, and became a box office success, there were many mixed and also more negative reviews – not only for Sofia’s acting performance, which was sometimes extremely harshly rated Coppola, who then embarked on a career as a successful director behind the camera.
The narrative structure, which was rather confused at times, and above all the very inconsistent tone were criticized – both elements that could be improved in the new cut version with a new arrangement of scenes. Fans of the legendary “The Godfather” trilogy can hope that the new version will take the series to a new level, so that this classic will also become a masterpiece – even if it will certainly never be the version that Coppola originally planned and which, among other things, included Robert Duvall as Tom Hagen, who was then written off again due to his salary expectations.
